What is Art Therapy?

The word ‘therapy’ actually means to be “attentive to.”   So art therapy would literally mean to be attentive to art.  But that doesn’t tell us much; there are many ways to be attentive to art—we can make it, buy it, appreciate it in our homes or in a museum—and we still haven’t touched on art therapy.

Add to that the fact that the minute one says “art” a good many people state that they can’t draw a straight line.  Explaining that one does not need to be an artist to do art therapy does not help—too many people have had their attempts at art-making belittled early in life.

Perhaps, the best definition for art therapy—being attentive to art—is that it is an uncensored creative self-expression that comes from the heart, not the head.
